Phelps to Work at Statue of Liberty
Phelps Construction Group has been awarded two projects by the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island foundation. The first project is the initial phase of the New Peopling of America Center at Ellis Island National Monument. This phase entails the necessary hazardous material, environmental cleanup and demolition work required for the completion of the new environmentally controlled storage space for artifacts. The existing artifacts storage space will be used to house the new museum. The Peopling of America Center will expand on the Ellis Island immigration museum to tell the story of the millions of Immigrants past and present who did not share the Ellis Island experience. The second project involves completing various site upgrades on Liberty Island. These upgrades include work on the Ferry Dock at Liberty Island which serves as the entrance point to the nearly two million people who visit to the Statue of Liberty National Monument each year. Work is also being done to repair the granite and brick masonry site walls and aluminum fencing around the island.
